Wallpaper Engine for Mac: does it exist?
No. Wallpaper Engine only runs on Windows (and Android). Its developers say a Mac version isn't economically viable for them and isn't planned. The good news: you can get a live desktop on your Mac another way, often a lighter one.
Three ways to get a live wallpaper on your Mac
1. A live wallpaper app built for the Mac
The simplest option: a native, lightweight app that applies a wallpaper in one click. Moireloop is one of them, along with Backdrop, Wallper, Wallspace or MacWall. They mostly differ in their library and pricing (one-time purchase or subscription): compare on their websites.
2. Play your Wallpaper Engine wallpapers
If you already have a Wallpaper Engine library, the Vivid Walls app can play some of its scenes on Apple silicon Macs, and an open-source project on GitHub is trying too. Not every wallpaper renders correctly yet.
3. Apple's own live wallpapers
Since macOS Sonoma, Apple's aerial wallpapers move, mostly on the lock screen. The choice is limited to Apple's landscapes, and you can't use your own videos.
Why we made Moireloop
What Wallpaper Engine does better (for now)
Its huge community workshop, with interactive wallpapers and websites as wallpapers. Moireloop bets on fewer, more polished wallpapers, and is soon opening its platform to artists, who get paid for their work.
FAQ
What if I run Windows on my Mac (Parallels, VMware)?
These apps run Windows in a window on your Mac. Wallpaper Engine works there, but it only changes that Windows desktop, not your Mac's.
Can I use my Wallpaper Engine wallpapers in Moireloop?
Video wallpapers (.mp4 or .mov files), yes: drop them into Moireloop, if you have the right to use them. Scenes and web wallpapers, no.
Is Moireloop free?
Yes. The app and all its wallpapers, premium included, are free at launch.
Which Mac do I need?
macOS 15 or later.
Premium
